Story-17. Klee
Ajax, thanks for the preliminary reading.
"Jail is the best alibi."
So said Alice, head of the Hexenzirkel, the Mondstadt Witches' Club. And since witchcraft couldn't provide for her well, she earned her money by espionage and diversions — so Alice was excellent at alibis.
One day Alice needed to sneak a bomb into a place where no one can enter even with a penknife.
So she caught a salamander, made her look like a seven-year-old girl, called her Klee, and pretended to be a beggar single mother who agreed to be a junior kitchen maid and work for food.
When the fire started not in the kitchen or bathhouse, but in the bedroom of one of the Dukes of Fontaine, and the palace burned with its master, no one knew which of the servants had escaped from the raging flames. It was impossible to find out whether any of the servants had taken any of the duke's treasures or his secret correspondence: only a handful of ashes remained of the palace and its owner.
Klee was useful to Alice in a few more cases, and when very tough troubles began to creep up on the witch's ass, she gave Klee to Albedo, Captain of the Investigation Team of the Order of Favonius, and disappeared without a trace right out from under the noses of her pursuers.
Klee didn't mind changing masters. She was even glad of that: it was easier for a salamander to communicate with a homunculus than with a human, and the Mondstadt winds fanned her flames well. The nature of the salamander, that is fire elemental, required constant movement, risk, and adventures, and Klee willingly accepted the rank of Knight of Favonius, which Albedo achieved for her, and she with excitement and pleasure began to fulfill his orders to gather information and hunt for rare ingredients. And the naive Jean made an ironclad alibi for Klee and Albedo every time they needed one: in Mondstadt it was said that Klee was in her cell six times a week. It was true, but there was a nuance to this: it was easier for Klee to leave prison than to enter one.
Fire has nine primary colors and more than three billion shades. Klee could change her own appearance, but with the help of an alchemist, she was much better at it. Alas, whether she was a girl or a boy, Klee was still a seven-year-old child, but with a few tricks it had solid advantages not available to those with adult appearances.
It was a time of very interesting events. After the Abyss army attacked Mondstadt City, the townspeople were very angry with the Order of Favonious, screaming that all of its property should be confiscated and the knights should be kicked out of the country or sent to hard labor. The farmers were also unhappy: while they were busy working hard, the knights were idly wandering the meadows and mountains on farmers' taxes, calling it patrolling, but the roads were full of monsters, and farmers had to spend money on mercenaries because without guards they couldn't take the fruits of their labor to the fair at Falcon Coast and to the city's shops.
May the Acting Grand Master Jean have obtained a talisman crucial to the survival of all Mondstadt, and may there be no other mage in the entire country with the power to perform such a quest, but Jean obliged to leave her viceroy in the city before her march, the Temporary Acting Grand Master. This doesn't have to be a mage — one could be a simple person who knows where to put mages. And this is not necessarily a knight — Jean could have found a mercenary or adventurer who has experience in organizing the defense of a city or its rescue in a natural disaster. However, Jean left the city when it was alone and unprotected.
The mayor of the city was also badly scolded, but he was less in demand; he reasonably shouted back that they had chosen a connoisseur of trade, not of fortress affairs. And all is well with trade, the number of caravans in and out of the city has increased. And, to divert attention away from himself, the mayor would take to blaming Jean and the Order of Favonius in a loud voice.
There was more and more talk among the townspeople that the talisman obtained by Jean was of no use: the dragon's attacks did no harm, only wind and noise, it was easy to drive it away — why would Jean wander around in the middle of nowhere instead of protecting the city? And did she bring the talisman to the city at all, or was she minding her own business, paying for it with the taxes of the townspeople?
The situation of Ordo Favonius was becoming critical.
If the Order fell, Uncle Albedo would not lose anything, he had long been called by the best research centers of Sumeru. And Noelle, so that her revenge against the Order wouldn't cause her best friend to suffer, found him a very lucrative position at Liyue. Uncle Albedo, and therefore Klee, would always have a nice house, good food, and fancy clothes.
But that wasn't enough for Klee!
Sumeru is unbearably boring, there is no adventure there. The air for fire is not so delicious in Liyue. Of course, with the help of an alchemist, combustion is possible even underwater or in a vacuum, not like in Liyue, but why limit yourself when Mondstadt has everything and in any quantity?
Therefore, the Order of the Favonius must survive!
To Klee's surprise, this idea was supported by Noelle. What's more, she was the first to bring it up and even insisted that Jean keep her position.
The task isn't easy when more and more townspeople want to hang her, and half of the knights are eager to help them do it, not only to save their asses but also to keep them in Mondstadt: half of the knights are refugees who didn't want to become beggar vagabonds again and even more unwilling to go back to where they escaped from.
Klee found Anna. Everyone in town thought she was a silly girl: throwing her family's last coins into the fountain all day long, thinking there was a fairy who would heal her for it. And she even said it was a fairy who had chased away the dragon!
And no one thought how a sick person could stand all day in the hot sunshine and drafts and not get even sicker, to death.
Anna's health was iron. And she was not a bad actress, of which any theater would be proud. But Anna collected information and sold it. And so did her brother at night.
And their pauper hut near the Market District led to a rather luxurious underground house. One was spared the Abyss attack, the hut had survived too, and Anna is hardly very angry with the Order. And she knows more about its real situation than any knight.
Klee discreetly showed Anna the heating talisman — it's always needed in the underground house, and a talisman from a salamander is not cheap. Anna had long known that Klee was a salamander and could change her appearance, so she was not surprised by her new looks. Anna said with a malevolent chuckle:
"The Fatui are jumping for joy like March hares. Jean has dipped herself in shit as deep as none of their saboteurs could have compromised her. Fatui needs only a little pushing on the emotions of the townspeople and farmers to start a general revolt. The only reason the Order is still alive is that Liyue wants to take over the Montshad trade, so he tries to kick Fatui out or at least reduce his influence."
"And what do you think?" Klee asked.
"I haven't decided yet. The Order did not accept me and my brother as knights because we are of plebeian origin, our grandparents were day laborers. I want to avenge that humiliation. But I don't want the Fatui, they are worse than the Order. And Liyue... The more they trade here, the better. Their goods are more varied and cheaper than Mondstadt's."
"If Liyue doesn't have a strong competitor," Klee said, "it'll quickly ruin the local trade and drive prices sky high. And thanks to Gerta, the Order of Favonius trades well. As long as they're in competition with Liyue's factions, the merchants of Mondshadt are doing quite well. And they buy information from you."
"It won't be easy to save the Order," Anna replied. "But Kaeya is having a secret conversation with Diluc, Katheryne, and Razor right now. Perhaps this is your chance."
"Razor?!" Klee marveled. "He hates the city-life and negotiations."
"And Barbara punched Barbatos with a fat stick. Well, not punched, it was more like… She had given him a couple of cuffs; she couldn't do anymore because Barbatos ran away from her to the Vennessa Tree. Barbara was too lazy to chase him, so she went back to the city. It was not far from the main gate, by the dandelion bushes. But most interestingly, the execution took place shortly after the church declared its independence from the Order of Favonius."
"Why did Barbara declare independence?" Klee asked. "Not the cardinal, not the seneschal, but Barbara. She's only a deaconess, there are sixteen more of them in the cathedral alone, and even more in the country. You're not human and you're not a mage, maybe a salamander can do that. These four will not begin their meeting at once. A late caravan has arrived at the "Angel's Share", and Diluc is busy with business. But you must hurry up! Diluc is very quick to solve problems."
Klee nodded and hurried into the tavern.
